Kanonkop Pinotage 2000

Varietal: Pinotage

Vineyard: Kanonkop

Region: South Africa, South Africa

The name "Kanonkop" derives from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century, to warn farmers in outlying areas that sailing ships plying the waters between Europe and the Far East had entered Table Bay for a stopover at Cape Town. The farmers would then load their wagons, hitch their oxen and set off to Cape Town to barter their produce, mainly fresh fruit and vegetables, to the sailors and travelers who had spent many months at sea. Today the land has been tamed completely and rich vineyards now create a patchwork quilt across the landscape.

Kanonkop is an innovative enterprise that has a solid wine growing foundation with ideal soils, cool sea breezes and long, lazy summer days, creating the perfect climate for grape growing. This is backed by progressive viticultural techniques and concepts in winemaking and marketing. Winemaker Beyers Truter is known throughout the wine world as "The King of Pinotage".

Tasting Notes: A deep red full bodied Pinotage with complex black and red berry and oak flavours on the palate that will integrate well with bottle age. A wine that will last at least 5-8 years in the bottle.

Food Match: cheese(soft), game, grilled meats, lamb, red meat, roasts, venison.
