Gainey Limited Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2007

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc

Vineyard: The Gainey Vineyard

Region: Central Coast, California

Our Limited Selection Sauvignon Blanc has long drawn the praise of leading wine wroters, including Paul Lukacs, who several years ago featured it in his much-lauded book, The Great Wines of America - The Top Forty Vintners, Vineyards, and Vintages. The 2007 vintage should further burnish the reputation of this distinguished wine. The picture-perfect 2007 growing season - dry, temperate and wonderfully consistent - led to an early harvest of pristine, perfectly ripened Sauvignon Blanc grapes in our Home Ranch vineyard. The nose of the 2007 Limited Selection reflects this purity, bursting from the glass with vivid aromas of white grapefruit, sweet lime, guava, honeydew melon and mineral, with subtle spring flower, vanilla and spice scents completing the olfactory panorama. On the palate, the wine initially is sleek and streamlined, then expands dramatically in mid-palate to deliver rich, concentrated, honeydew melon flavors that resolve in a long, crisp finish dominated by mouthwatering mineral and pomelo tones. This superb Santa Ynez Valley Sauvignon Blanc drinks deliciously now with a broad range of fish, fowl and vegetarian dishes, but it will develop even greater appeal and complexity with another 2-3 years of bottle age.

This bottling from veteran Gainey is one of the most dependable in California. The '07 doesn't disappoint, bringing back memories of the fabulous '04 and '05. Like them, it's dry, rich and crisp in acidity, with a sourdough yeastiness, like Champagne, that heightens and brightens the lemon, lime, fig and spice flavors. — Editors' Choice, Wine Enthusiast 02/09
